Artist Statement

From a response to something which moves me, I let emotions filter through the act of painting and the substance of paint. This contemplative process unfolds over time — days, weeks, months, sometimes a year or more. Eventually the painting returns to a subject, which through the passage of time involved is often substantially altered.

Unknowing is important. Though it can be very difficult and disorienting at times, I’m finally comfortable with it because it’s more interesting. Too much certainty dulls both the experience of painting and its results.

Enoncé d'artiste

Le début d’un tableau c’est une réaction a quelque chose d’émouvant. Une réaction ensuite filtrée par l’acte de peindre et la matière de la peinture. Ce processus de contemplation se déroule durant une période de temps s’agissant de jours, de semaines, de mois et parfois, plus d’un an. Eventuellement l’oeuvre se recentre vers son sujet, transformé par le temps qui a fait partie de sa création.

En travaillant il faut que je laisse tomber la certitude et oublier beaucoup de ce que je crois savoir pour écouter l’oeuvre se révéler. C’est difficile mais aussi, essentiel. Avec trop de certitude la finesse des sens devient terne.

An Act of Passion

Joie de Vivre 15th Anniversary Celebration, July 2007

Dedicating your life to making art is an act of passion and commitment.

In this show we’ve invited several artists who have shown that dedication to their work for most of their lives. Some work dilligently with materials to expand their range of knowledge and expression, others focus on ideas, still others on their experience and perception of life. And, neither of these attempts at categorization excludes the others. Art is complex. All artists give form to thought through making something which leaves a trace and can also be shared with others.

Whether exploring and re-defining materials, articulating ideas, or filtering life’s experiences through art, creativity is a powerful engagement with life and we, as artists, affirm this again and again through much of what we do.

Etre artiste - une passion

Joie de Vivre - célébration du 15e anniversaire, juillet 2007

Se vouer à la création de l’art est un acte d’engagement et de passion.

Dans cette exposition nous avons invité ces artistes qui ont fait preuve de cet engagement avec leur art pour une grande partie de leur vie. Quelques uns explorent leurs matériaux pour en connaitre pleinement la gamme d’expression, d’autres se concentrent sur une idée, un concept et d’autres sur leurs perceptions et expériences du vécu. Il va aussi presque sans dire qu’une de ces catégorisations n’exclut pas les autres. L’art est complexe.

Tous les artistes donnent forme à la pensée en créant quelque chose qui laisse une trace et qui se partage avec les autres.

Que l’on explore les capacités d’un matériau, que l’on tente définir un concept ou encore filtrer le vécu à travers la lentille de l’art, la créativité est un engagement avec la vie et nous, les artistes, affirmons cet engagement maintes et maintes fois dans beaucoup de ce que l’on fait.

Watercolours 2005

In addition to what I see, in these recent paintings I've attempted to interpret what I hear, sense, and touch through my experience of nature. Living close to the Bay of Fundy for several years has transformed my knowledge of the natural world. The quality of light filtered through the atmosphere, the tides, winds, bird migrations, and layers of history have enriched my understanding of what constitutes landscape and forms our impressions of it.

The inherent qualities of watercolour paint and the various papers which contribute as much to expression as to a surface for painting have offered me new directions and interpretive possibilities.

Aquarelles 2005

En plus de ce que je vois, dans ces oeuvres récentes j'interprète ce que j'entends, ce que je touche et perçois à travers mon vécu près de la nature. Depuis plusieurs années je vis près de la baie de Fundy - expérience qui transforme et enrichit ma connaissance du monde naturel. La qualité de la lumière, les marées et les vents, les migrations d'oiseaux, la texture des marais et les strates de l'histoire de la région ont approfondi ce que veut dire pour moi peindre le paysage.

Les qualités matérielles de l'aquarelle, et des papiers qui contribuent tant à l'expressivité de ce médium, m'offrent beaucoup de possibilités d'interprétation de ce paysage qui continue à m'inspirer.

Re - Creating Paradise
5 women - their gardens, their art

This show is like a garden of art. With four wonderful women to work with, I have let the idea grow and find its own form with only a bit of gentle guidance along the way. Each artist presents strength and delicacy of perception in her work.

The result is a life-affirming and intimate blend of experience, thought, and emotion. A fine ode to summer, arguably the most visually exuberant season of gardening in our Northern hemisphere.

5 femmes - leurs jardins, leurs art

Cette exposition ressemble à un jardin d’art. En travaillant avec ces quatre femmes-artistes, robustes et exceptionnelles, j’ai laissé l’idée d’origine prendre forme avec seulement un peu d’intervention. Chaque artiste présente des oeuvres qui démontrent perception subtile et vigueur.

Il en résulte un mélange affirmatif et intime d’expérience, de réflexion, et de sensibilité. Ensembles nous célébrons l’éte, saison visuelle et sensuelle de notre hémisphère boréal.

A Season of Tulips - June 2001

The tulip series holds several aspects of my life as an artist together. For the past 10 years a considerable portion of my time has been dedicated to making our gallery a viable place for artists to show their work and be treated with respect while dealing with the realities of living in our socio-economic context. This, combined with demanding professional relationships with the artists we show, and the daily grind of maintaining a small business with next to no financial resources has definitely been a challenge.

At times I have felt my hold on what motivates me to make art grow tenuous. Making art requires tremendous focus, the luxury of time, and great amounts of physical, emotional, and intellectual energy. With so many other demands on my time that energy is not always present.

In the past few years, like many people, I have begun to take serious pleasure in gardening. Its demands are different, though also physically exhausting at times.The very definite beauty of gardening is also easily shared and appreciated. It is a lifeline.

Through the tulip series I have been able to focus on and explore some of these thoughts and emotions visually. A work of contemplation offered in an only slightly mediated form to that which I do in the garden itself.

A Season of Tulips

The Tulip, like the rose, is a symbolic flower with a complex and fascinating history. Still, it is a flower of great simplicity and elegance of form.

I love planting the mysterious bulbs in late fall, a laborious act of faith before the long winter months ahead. In earliest spring, I wait as the tulips begin to grow under the snow. Each successive stage of growth offers contemplative possibility until finally the buds begin to open and the colours of the petals develop and ripen - changing throughout the day if you take time to watch them.

The tulip is a marvel of botanical experimentation - a celebration of science and art. A simple flower used in many ways through centuries to express our desires, aspirations, our curiosity, our greed, and our impossible quest for perfection.

Une Saison de Tulipes

Comme la rose, la tulipe est une fleur hautement symbolique avec une histoire complexe et fascinante. La tulipe demeure toutefois d’une grande simplicité et d’élégance dans sa forme.

A l’automne je me plais à planter les mystérieux bulbes - un acte de foi, quoique laborieux, précédant les longs mois d’hiver. Tôt le printemps j’attends tandis que poussent les tulipes sous la neige. Chaque étape de croissance offre des possibilités de contemplation jusqu’à ce que les bourgeons commencent à éclore et les couleurs des pétales se développent et mûrissent, changeant tout au cours de la journée si on les observe attentivement.

La tulipe est aussi une merveille du monde botanique - elle célèbre l’union de la science et l’art. Une simple fleur dont on s’est servi au cours des siècles pour exprimer nos désirs, nos aspirations, notre cupidité et peut-être surtout, notre quête impossible de la perfection.

La densité des jours

Statement for the exhibition 'Etymology', October 1992

I would like the title of this work 'La densité des jours, paysages' from which 'Etymology' is drawn, to be understood in a poetic sense. I emphasize, however, that words, titles, and quotes are present as anchors and as reference rather than keys to, or symbols of hidden or coded meaning. The work is permeable and invites interpretation.

The scientific definition of density has also entered into play suggesting exploration of the material properties and qualities of paint - exploration which in turn has enriched my understanding of the vocabulary and language of painting.

Within this frame of reference, the word density alludes to the figurative weight attached to the experience we incorporate in our relation with geography. As we trace pathways through the space and matter of landscape, both across the physical terrain and in our minds, we clothe our affinity to the earth with emotion and embrace it with thought. When the landscape has become vivid and familiar to us, memory begins its contribution to this complex relation adding to the metaphorical weight of our experience.

It is at this point between the physical landscape and the living landscape of memory that I wish to situate myself and my work - to interpret and translate my experience. Attempted as it is through the language of paint, the translation is circuitous.

A further aspect of the work lies in its examination of geographic representation. I am interested in the conventions and abstractions used to represent the world, and the ways in which these models influence our perception. The numerous ways we situate ourselves psychologically and philosophically in relation to the earth, and the means we employ to map our planet are part of the ongoing focus of this body of work.
